Short summary:
When an AI-generated so-called “exposé platform” launched by Germany’s far-right party, the AfD, sought to discredit civil society organizations, many expected outrage and amplification. Instead, the German Fundraising Association and a broad alliance of partners responded directly with a proactive prebunking* strategy.
Full description:
Rather than reacting to the attack on its own terms, organizations focused on telling their own story – sharing transparent facts, reinforcing public trust, and providing clear communication before misinformation could spread.
The response combined rapid coordination with practical support. Regular briefing emails provided updates, communication guidance, FAQs, and ready-to-use materials, while a large online exchange enabled organizations to align messaging, answer key questions, and coordinate next steps. Across the network, partners shared expertise, took on tasks for one another, and demonstrated how solidarity can strengthen the resilience of the entire sector.
A particular focus was helping organizations communicate confidently with their donors, ensuring transparency and trust during a highly polarized public debate.
The far-right campaign failed to generate the attention its initiators had hoped for, and large parts of the platform were eventually taken offline.
