On Anchors And Movement In Times Of Unrest

Short summary:

In a time when reality is changing faster than we can process, it is no longer enough to simply observe. Uncertainty compels us to act consciously and responsibly. Being an anchor today means holding a steady course – even when the destination is still out of sight.

Full description:

The presentation reflects on the experience of civic activism in Slovakia during a period of political uncertainty. It highlights the importance of “anchors” – values, people, and communities – and the need for bold action rather than resignation in the face of rising authoritarianism. It shows how public anger mobilised tens of thousands to take to the streets, with protests becoming spaces of hope, solidarity, and an outlet for frustration.

The talk also underscores the role of grassroots fundraising, which, without any state support, enabled a series of events funded by more than 7,265 donors contributing a total of €220,000. It warns against the relativisation of values, the normalisation of cynicism, and attacks on civil society, stressing that trust, vision, courage, and active citizenship are stronger forces than fear.

Main takeaway/Key learning point:

  • A request for financial support is almost certain to succeed if it forms part of a larger story that resonates with many people, or if it is framed as fundraising in the context of resistance.
