Full description:

Fondazione Carifano’s Crowdfunding Grant Program in Fano, Marche, goes beyond fundraising to drive digital transformation and strengthen civic space and democracy by empowering citizens as co-creators of local change. The initiative is notable for the close collaboration between Fondazione Carifano, CSV Marche (Voluntary Service Centre), and Rete del Dono (Italy’s leading Third Sector crowdfunding platform). They co-design calls for proposals, provide tailored capacity building, and offer hands-on guidance throughout campaigns. Local organisations, across various sectors, gain funding, practical skills, and strategic support to engage communities participatorily.

Crowdfunding allows philanthropy to redistribute resources and create a virtuous cycle of bottom-up regeneration. In four editions, over 40 local non-profits raised €455,000 from over 2,000 donors, achieving an average annual growth of +25%. The 5th edition will involve 24 organisations expanding their digital fundraising capacity and mobilising communities. Training, peer exchange, and matching grants from the Foundation (up to €15,000) build strong ties with local supporters, activate new donors, and protect civic space by giving people a real stake in shaping their communities. This transforms crowdfunding into a tool for financial sustainability, democratic engagement, civic empowerment, and community regeneration.

Main takeaway/Key learning point:

  • Crowdfunding helps philanthropy redistribute and maximise resources through a virtuous, bottom-up cycle, strengthening civic space, digital skills, and trust, and inspiring a giving culture for community change.
